Hello shanshan,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I agreed that repetition strenghthens memory and imperceptibly influences learners. When learners becoming proficient with skills or the knowledge they learned, their behavior will become habitual.

Hello Elben,

Thanks for your post! I like these examples you stated, learning process must follow the principle of gradual improvement and at first scarcely visible. We may forget when was the first time using multiplication operators but it etched deeply in our memory so that we can have access to the knowledge at anytime.

Hello Julia,

Thanks for your post. I totally agree with your thoughts. I think experiential learning is a great way for learners to interact ideas with their peers and it is also a great way to improve learners’ retention of knowledge and skills with the manner connecting theory into practice.

Hello Ziming

Thanks for your post. I think direct instruction is the most effective educational approach since it gives students clear advantages as you’ve already mentioned so learners are able to absorb knowledge directly and easily. In addition, it also relies on teacher’s teaching style, a proper and well-structured design could expand the virtue of direct instruction.

Hi Omar,

I agree with you said to provide equal opportunity to everyone needed. It is a core idea of bringing inclusive design to learners, and the design you made to any leaner at any level can participate just can prove the core idea. Something I am wondering after reading your post is that I understand the reason you mentioned encouraging learners to share their perspectives, but in what way they could receive feedbacks? Normally, instructor is also indispensable to be invovled in interactive communication.

Hello Yuqi,

I noticed that there is a specifc explaination about inclusive design, which is, in my opinion, authoritative and accurate. I like the way you did by citing a short video as a tip to better understand. I agree on taking all different barriers into consideration since barriers take place not only because of physical defects but also varied in different situations, such as family issues, jet lag etc.. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Yuqi,

Thanks for sharing. I like your way of collecting students’ feedback in the discussion forum as same as I did in my design. It is a good method to enable interactive communication in a synchronous course.

Hello Jiaqi,

Thanks for sharing. I think these three videos are well chosen. Despite I’m not the student, I was interested becasue I think these videos move freely from introduction to solution. After watching the videos, learners could first identify and recognize appearance anxiety then will be able to get rid of it. I also agree with the idea of encouraging student stand in front of the mirror to praise themselves in order to build self-confidence, it will not only help them in studying but more importantly in their life.

POST 5: PEER REVIEW for pod 1

Here is the link to Pod 1: https://www.notion.so/Interactive-Learning-Resource-a4524977fd9d4a409d707c0cb4327b92

It was a pleasure to read and write peer reveiw for your group and thanks for sharing your interactive learning resource with us.

It is definitely a great job that impressed me a lot, so I’d like to share some of my thoughts. The whole web page is well-developed with its fonts, panels and, each section is well organized and distributed into various categories. Students should be able to collect informations effectively since the titles are really eye-catching to get a general idea of how this course will be carrying on. Moreover, the design is also inclusive as you declared that “This course is asynchronous…to accomodate individual’s need”, you also take possible language barrier into your consideration and provide various teaching materials to solve it.

The learning context and learning outcome are also explained in an explicit way showing that the purpose of why course meant to be edited and designed like this. I think the assessment is evened out, students will not be facing strong pressure yet still learn a lot from this course. I also notice that a forum and group summative project were created, such an approach can enable interaction among students and help them to reach the learning outcomes you set for them.

Overall, this course design is very interactive. I will be happy to see the final website!

POST 4: Design for interaction

–What kind of interaction would the video require from your students? Does it force them to respond in some way (inherent)?

In Anthony’s book, he stressed the importance of interaction in education and the ways to provide practical interaction, “The interaction generated when students work on a particular medium, such as… short video clip”. To make the learners easier to understand the photography history, we choose the aboved video to address the course principle to them since it explains the timeline succinctly.

The video with learning material is not inherently interactive thus it will not force them to respond, however, we would encourage learners to provide their responds through our adequate designed activities.

-In what way are they likely to respond to the video on their own, e.g. make notes, do an activity, think about the topic (learner-generated)?

The learners could respond to the video by notes taking, it will help them to straighten the structure of the lesson and comprehend the connection between video and course material.

After that, we will arrange them into a group discussion where they can share their thoughts with others. It can be said that asynchronous online discussion forum enable student-student interaction in terms of equal participation in class.

How would students get feedback on the activity that you set? What medium or technology would they and/or you use for getting and giving feedback on their activity?

We will attempt to provide timely feedback because “it is an important aspect of interaction…appropriate feedback on learner activities is often esstential for effective learning”.

For each online forum we created, there will be an office hour that I could exchange information with students. Under the situation with computer-based learning, student will receive instant-feedback after they finished quiz or I will comment to the question if most people get it wrong.

Participating in group discussion will be counted into final grade, so a grade rubric will be given to students that make explicit of how instructor will evaluate their work.

I will use email and online-forum as the medium to giving and getting feedback.

How much work for you would that activity cause? Would the work be both manageable and worthwhile? Could the activity be scaled for larger numbers of students?

I will need to divide learners into serveral groups and collect their ideas in order to get to know how well they understand the concept so I can make a quiz based on their performance. I believe the work will be both manageable and worthwhile because teacher-student interaction is well-needed and help students to achieve excellent learning outcomes.

Post 3: Inclusive design learning

As a learning designer, it is important to build a interactive environment by adapting the framwork of both universal design and inclusive design in order to eliminate any possible barriers for learners. It is not only about how to ensure the fairness in every situations but more importantly to remove the variability which may cause an unfair situation.

How will your interactive learning resource specifically ensure that the needs of all learners can be met?

My learning pod is well-awared of the principle of the universal design and its importance, we plan to benifit all learners especially during the global pandemic. The resource were all provided by online free access for everyone who registered in this course, for instance, learners can change the sub-titles in the video if the voice is not clear enough or download in their own space. To keep learners concentrated during their learning process, we give sufficient consideration to the time required on each steps. Therefore, we did not make the context in a complex way.

Consider the learning environment for your current design. What potential barriers can be reduced or eliminated to provide more pathways for learner success?

In my perspective, communication is paramount in education. Whether it is instructor to learner or student to student, because it alway conveys information and stimulates thinking. At present, a potential barrier would be less communication in the learning environment so information could not be exchanged in time. Therefore, The class forum is created and opened for everyone to post their thoughts or quesions derived from the course, they can remain anoymous if they wish so that students will have a place to communicate with each other.

In order to make a design for inclusion, we make our course material, assessment, tests well matched. For instance, we ask the learners to visit an exhibition (online or offline) and then share their experience on the forum, later they will be asking to write an essay to identify major stylistic periods and exemplary works in the international history of photography based on the exhibits they visited.

POST 2: Share a story about your best learning experience.

As a student who’s majoring in economy, the best learning experience so far was the microeconomics 1 which I’ve taken in college. Why I said it was special, I guess simply because I just wanted to re-take it even I’ve got A grade. Unlike other courses, some professors would introduce the concept mostly through the lectures while we must take a lot of notes in order to memorize all of these. He’s using authentic assessment to address the concepts by relating all the concepts with daily examples thus those examples were like stimuli that helped me to recall the knowledge and not by rote learning. Authentic assessments are based in real-world relevance. Authentic assessments include activities that closely match real-world tasks undertaken by practitioners. (Concrad & Openo, 2018) In this way, the stored knowledge could last longer since I play a more active role of my own learning process.

Individuals have different levels of study ability in relation to the outcomes. Someone may do it poorly at the beginning but soon can recover to an excellent grade at the end of the course. On the syllabus, we were told that we can remove the worst midterm score if we are resulting in a better grade on finals.Because generally we assume that a learner’s ability will reflect on his/her final score, but we cannot quantify learning only infer from learner work. This method could eliminate the errors caused from observing scores as much as possible. In my perspective, this was a fair method to examine our outcomes.

In a well-considered assessment plan, which always includes three components: cognition, observation, interpretation. He provided us with a schedule or domain about what we will be doing each weeks, we were able to recognize and clarify the complex topics. After each quizzes or tests we will be asked for feedbacks, there were always a few specific adjustments he made afterwards based on his observation. It was really efficient.

Post 1: Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism

In a classroom, the behavioral is the key in understanding how to motivate and help students. Behaviorists attempt to prescribe strategies that are most useful for building and strengthening stimulus-response associations, including the use of instructional cues, practice, and reinforcement (Ertmer&Newby, 2013).

When the first day I was taught to learn playing guitar, my teacher gave me a pop-quiz to test the level of my muscial knowledge. Sooner he tailored a behavioristic method for me by drawing the basic chords on the flashcards according to its right position on the strings. The flashcards were just like a stimulus, only after a few days my hands was able to quickly respond no matter which one he showed randomly. The greastest benefits of this method is that it will imperceptibly helped me to memorize without noticing much pressures.

Cognitive theories stress the acquisition of knowledge and internal mental structures (Ertmer&Newby, 2013), not only about how much they learned but more importantly how learners actively participated in the learning process to acquire knowledge.

There was a period of time back in my high school, I was studying the modern history of China. It was difficult to organize a series of the events happened in that brief period of instability, therefore I had to seek our professor for some interpretations on specific questions.

As the constructivistic method of learning, instructors would always creat a connection between the source of meaning and the enviroment. This is also the most effective learning process to me. It is my first time to take EDCI 335, I had to admit that many things I did not completely understand but I solved many problems within my learing pod.
